One of the first questions almost every senior (and mom!) asks me is:
“Where should I take my senior pictures?”
It’s a great question.
But after photographing seniors across Eastern Wisconsin for more than 15 years, I’ve learned there’s actually a better one.
“Where do you feel most like yourself?”
Because the truth is, the most meaningful senior portraits don’t start with the prettiest beach, the most colorful wildflowers, or the trendiest downtown.
They start with you.
Maybe you come alive the second you step onto a Lake Michigan beach with the wind in your hair.
Maybe you feel happiest wandering quiet wooded trails, surrounded by wildflowers.
Maybe brick streets, coffee shops, and historic buildings feel more like home.
Or maybe your favorite place in the world is the volleyball court, theater stage, football field, dance studio, or family property where so many of your favorite memories have already been made.
There isn’t one perfect location.
There is only the location that feels like your story.
That’s one of my favorite parts of planning every senior session. Before we ever choose outfits or start talking about poses, we spend time discovering what places reflect your personality, your interests, and the season of life you’re celebrating. When the location feels authentic, everything else starts to fall into place. Your expressions become more natural. You feel more relaxed. Your images become less about posing for a camera and more about remembering this exciting chapter of your life.
Over the years, I’ve photographed seniors in beaches, forests, wildflower fields, charming downtowns, gardens, school stadiums, and countless hidden corners throughout Eastern Wisconsin. Each location offers something different, and each tells a different story.

Inside, I’ll share some of my favorite senior picture locations across Eastern Wisconsin, along with what makes each one unique, who it’s best suited for, what to wear, and a few insider tips I’ve learned after years of photographing there.

One minute you’re drawn to a dreamy beach at sunset. The next, you’re loving an urban downtown with brick streets and coffee shops. Then you see a field full of wildflowers and change your mind all over again.
Here’s the good news:
You don’t have to choose the “prettiest” location. You just have to choose the one that feels the most like you.
The best senior portraits aren’t created because everyone is standing in the same beautiful place.
They’re created because the location reflects your personality, your interests, and the season of life you’re celebrating.
As you look through the locations below, don’t ask yourself,
“Which one is the most popular?”
Instead, ask yourself,
“Where can I picture myself laughing, exploring, and feeling completely comfortable?”

Many of my favorite senior sessions actually combine two completely different locations.
A senior who loves the beach might finish the evening downtown.
Someone who spends every fall on the volleyball court might also want quiet sunset portraits in a wildflower field.
There are no rules.

If you’ve ever dreamed of senior pictures that feel effortless, adventurous, and natural, Kohler-Andrae State Park is hard to beat.
With miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, rolling sand dunes, wooden boardwalks, and beautiful trails through dense forest, this location offers an incredible variety of backdrops without ever feeling crowded or overdone. It’s one of those places where the scenery is stunning, but it never outshines the person in front of the camera.
What I love most about Kohler-Andrae isn’t just how beautiful it is—it’s how it makes people feel. Something changes when seniors kick off their shoes, feel the sand beneath their feet, and stop worrying about getting everything “just right.” They laugh a little more, move a little more naturally, and simply enjoy the experience. Those are often the moments that become everyone’s favorite photographs.

This location is incredibly versatile, but I especially love soft, long flowing dresses that catch the lake breeze. Creams, soft blues, sage green, dusty rose, and other earthy or coastal-inspired colors photograph beautifully here. Solid colors work especially well, although subtle patterns can also complement the natural surroundings.
If you’re planning multiple outfits, I often recommend pairing one dressier look with something a little more casual so your gallery has plenty of variety.
Some of my favorite images here happen in between the poses: walking along the shoreline, watching the waves, or simply taking a deep breath as the sun begins to set. If you trust the process and let yourself enjoy the experience, Kohler-Andrae has a way of creating photographs that feel just as unforgettable as the evening itself.G
If your Pinterest board is filled with cute coffee shops, brick streets, window shopping, and effortlessly stylish outfits, Downtown Sheboygan might be exactly what you’re looking for.
One of the things I love most about photographing here is the incredible variety packed into a relatively small area. Within just a few blocks, we can find historic brick buildings, colorful murals, beautiful architecture, quiet alleyways, fountains, modern storefronts, and little pockets of greenery. Instead of feeling like one location, it almost feels like several sessions rolled into one.
But what really makes downtown special isn’t the buildings—it’s the energy. Walking through downtown naturally creates movement. Instead of standing in one spot wondering what to do with your hands, you’re strolling down sidewalks, laughing between locations, peeking into shop windows, or simply enjoying the evening. Those little moments often become the photographs that feel the most genuine.

Downtown is one of the most versatile locations we photograph, which means you can easily dress it up or keep it more casual.
Flowy dresses, jeans with a cute top, tailored pants, jumpsuits, or even a blazer can all work beautifully here. I usually recommend solid colors or very subtle patterns so the architecture complements your outfit instead of competing with it.
If you’re bringing multiple outfits, this is a wonderful place to mix styles—perhaps something dressy for the elegant architecture, followed by a casual outfit that feels relaxed and completely you.
One of my favorite things about Downtown Sheboygan is that I almost never follow the exact same route twice.
Some of the best photographs happen because we notice beautiful light spilling into an alley, reflections in a storefront window, or flowers blooming where we didn’t expect them. I always leave room for those little surprises because they often become the images that feel the most personal.
Tucked away just outside Plymouth, Nichols Creek feels like stepping into a place that not everyone knows exists. It’s peaceful, beautifully natural, and one of my favorite locations for seniors who want their session to feel relaxed…and maybe even a little adventurous.
What makes Nichols Creek so special is the nature you’ll find as we explore. Depending on the season, we can photograph in open fields, winding wooded trails, wildflowers, alongside the creek, or on the charming wooden bridge that has become one of my favorite spots. It feels secluded without being difficult to get to, giving us the freedom to slow down and enjoy the experience.
I especially love this location for seniors who don’t necessarily want to be the center of attention. It’s rarely very crowded and there’s something about being surrounded by nature that helps people relax.

Nichols Creek is one of those places where almost everything inspired by nature feels right at home.
Flowy dresses are fun because they create beautiful movement as you walk. Sweaters and jeans fit in equally as well. Soft earth tones, creams, sage greens, dusty blues, muted florals, and warm neutrals all photograph beautifully against the surrounding landscape. While solid colors are always a safe choice, subtle patterns can also work wonderfully in this setting.
This is one of my all-time favorite locations—I’ve even chosen it as a location for one of my own photoshoots!
Instead of hurrying from one backdrop to the next, we can wander, explore, and stop whenever beautiful light catches our eye. Some of my favorite images here weren’t planned at all—they happened because we slowed down enough to notice something unexpected.
If you’re the kind of person who finds peace in nature, there’s a good chance you’ll fall in love with this place just as much as I have.
If your style leans a little more timeless than trendy, The American Club offers one of the most elegant settings in Eastern Wisconsin for senior portraits.
Beautiful red brick architecture, manicured gardens, charming courtyards, and beautifully maintained landscaping create a backdrop that feels refined without feeling stuffy. It’s sophisticated, welcoming, and photographs beautifully in every season.
One of the things I love most about photographing here is how effortlessly polished everything feels. We don’t have to search very hard for beautiful light or interesting backgrounds because they’re everywhere. Every turn seems to reveal another quiet courtyard, flowering garden, or architectural detail that adds depth and character to your images.

This location naturally lends itself well to solid color and simple outfits, whether that is casual jeans or something slightly more elegant.
Flowy dresses, skirts, tailored pants, jumpsuits, or even a classic suit all look wonderful here. I especially love soft neutrals, navy, sage green, dusty blue, blush, and cream. Because of the abundance of red brick, I usually recommend avoiding burgundy or deep reds so your outfit doesn’t blend into the surroundings.
Don’t feel like you need to wear something overly formal just because the location feels elegant.
One of my favorite things about The American Club is that it never competes for attention. Instead, it quietly elevates every image while allowing you to remain the focus.
There’s something about Blue Harbor Beach that simply feels like summer. Every session here seems to feel just a little more carefree from the moment we step onto the sand.
While Kohler-Andrae offers sweeping dunes and a more adventurous feel, Blue Harbor has its own personality. It’s relaxed, bright, and easygoing. If your dream session includes laughing by the water, sitting in the tall grass, dipping your toes in the lake, or twirling on the beach on a warm Wisconsin evening, Blue Harbor is the perfect place to tell your story.
One of my favorite things about this location is how much variety we can create without ever leaving the area. We might start along the boardwalk as it winds through the tall beach grasses, wander through patches of seasonal wildflowers, stroll the shoreline as the waves roll in, and finish the evening on the large shoreline rocks overlooking Lake Michigan. Even though we’re in one location, your gallery will feel like we visited several.

Blue Harbor photographs beautifully with outfits that feel light, comfortable, and effortless.
Flowy dresses are always a favorite, especially when they catch the breeze along the shoreline. Soft blues, creams, whites, sage greens, blush tones, and light neutrals all complement the colors of the lake beautifully. Casual outfits—like jeans with a simple top or a favorite summer dress—also fit naturally with the relaxed feel of this location.
Because we photograph in several different areas—from the grassy boardwalk to the shoreline and rocky waterfront—your gallery naturally has a wonderful mix of close-up portraits, wide scenic images, and everything in between.
One of my favorite ways to photograph Blue Harbor is to let the evening unfold naturally.
We’ll often begin among the tall grasses and boardwalk while the sun is still a little higher, then I almost always suggest spending a few minutes around the large shoreline rocks. Before the session ends we make our way toward the shoreline as the light softens.
And don’t be surprised if I encourage you to kick off your shoes before we finish. Some of the most genuine smiles happen when you’re simply enjoying the moment instead of thinking about the camera.
When families begin thinking about senior picture locations, they often focus on finding the prettiest place.
But some of the most meaningful locations have very little to do with beautiful scenery.
They’re the places that helped shape who you are.
The football field where Friday nights became unforgettable.
The dance studio where you spent countless hours chasing one more perfect routine.
The library where you discovered your love of reading.
The horse barn where you’ve found peace after a long day.
The bowling alley where your team became family.
The bike trails where you’ve pushed yourself farther than you thought possible.
The swimming pool where early mornings and endless laps taught you perseverance.
The airport where your dream of becoming a pilot first took flight.
These places aren’t just backdrops.
They’re chapters of your story.
One of my favorite things about planning senior sessions is helping seniors think beyond parks and beaches. Sometimes the location that creates the most meaningful images is the one you’ve visited thousands of times without ever thinking of it as beautiful.
Because beauty isn’t always found in the location itself.
Sometimes it’s found in the memories you’ve created there.
Many of my seniors choose to pair one of these meaningful locations with somewhere completely different—a beach at sunset, a downtown area, or a quiet nature preserve. The combination creates a gallery that celebrates not only what you’ve accomplished, but who you are beyond those achievements.

Many seniors choose something that represents their passion—a uniform, dance costume, riding clothes, bowling jersey, swimsuit, letter jacket, or other meaningful outfit.

If you’re drawn to charming brick streets, cozy coffee shops, and the feeling of a small town where life slows down just a little, Downtown Plymouth is a wonderful place for your senior session.
One of the things I love most about photographing here is how effortlessly inviting it feels. You don’t have to travel to a big city to find beautiful architecture or interesting backdrops. Plymouth has its own personality—historic storefronts, brick walkways, murals, little alleyways, and beautifully maintained public spaces that create endless opportunities for unique portraits.
One of my absolute favorite places in all of downtown is a charming ivy-covered red brick alley that feels like a hidden little corner of the city. It’s one of those spots people walk right past without realizing how beautifully it photographs. The ivy adds incredible texture and color, creating portraits that feel both timeless and a little unexpected.
Just a short walk away, the Mullet River offers an entirely different look. A peaceful riverfront, a charming wooden bridge, wooded walking paths, and beautiful natural scenery give us the opportunity to blend the warmth of downtown with the softness of nature—all in the same session. It’s one of the reasons I love photographing here so much. Within just a few minutes, we can create a gallery that feels wonderfully diverse while never having to move the car.

Downtown Plymouth is incredibly versatile, making it easy to mix casual and dressy outfits during the same session.
Flowy dresses always photograph beautifully against the historic architecture, while jeans paired with a favorite sweater, blouse, or denim jacket create a relaxed, everyday look that fits perfectly with the town’s welcoming feel. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, sage green, dusty blue, mustard, rust, and subtle floral patterns all work beautifully here throughout the year.
Because we can easily transition from brick streets and storefronts to the peaceful riverfront, this is one of my favorite locations for creating a gallery that feels both polished and natural.
One of my favorite things about Downtown Plymouth is that every time I photograph here, I discover something new.
We’ll wander without a strict plan, paying attention to beautiful light, interesting textures, and little details that catch our eye along the way. Some evenings we spend extra time in my favorite ivy-covered alley. Other times we find ourselves walking along the Mullet River just as the sun begins filtering through the trees. Those unplanned moments often become my favorite images from the entire session.

Some locations ask you to slow down the moment you arrive.
Maywood is one of those places.
With its winding trails, towering trees, open meadows, and ever-changing natural beauty, Maywood offers a peaceful setting that feels removed from the busyness of everyday life. It’s not flashy or dramatic—and that’s exactly what makes it so special. The beauty here is quiet, allowing your personality to take center stage.
One of the things I appreciate most about Maywood is how different it looks throughout the seasons. Fresh greens in the spring, wildflowers in the summer, vibrant fall color, and even the simplicity of late autumn all bring something unique to your session. No matter the time of year, it has a timeless quality that never feels trendy.
As we explore, you’ll notice that the scenery changes naturally around every bend. There are wooded trails, open grassy spaces, and a few charming wooden bridges tucked throughout the park. While the main bridge is certainly beautiful, one of my favorite stops is actually a smaller, more quaint bridge that’s easy to overlook. It’s quiet, full of character, and creates some of my favorite portraits in the entire park.

One of the things I love most about Maywood is that it invites us to wander instead of rushing from one backdrop to the next.
We’ll take our time exploring the trails, noticing beautiful light filtering through the trees, and stopping whenever something catches our eye. Sometimes it’s a patch of wildflowers. Other times it’s that little wooden bridge tucked away from the main path that most visitors barely notice—but somehow always seems to create beautiful, intimate portraits.
That’s one of my favorite things about Maywood. The magic isn’t found in one famous spot. It’s found in slowing down enough to discover the quiet little places in between.
If you’re looking for a location that feels polished, timeless, and full of variety, Woodlake is one of my favorite hidden gems in Eastern Wisconsin.
Located on the beautifully landscaped grounds surrounding the Shops at Woodlake, this area blends charming architecture with peaceful walking paths, mature trees, beautiful gardens, and thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces. It offers an elevated feel without ever feeling overly formal, making it a wonderful choice for seniors who love a little sophistication while still wanting their session to feel relaxed and natural.
One of the reasons I keep coming back to Woodlake is the incredible variety packed into such a walkable area. Within a short distance, we can photograph against beautiful red brick buildings, charming storefronts, elegant stairways, landscaped gardens, tree-lined walking paths, and quiet little corners that most visitors walk right past. Even though everything is close together, your gallery will feel wonderfully diverse.
One of my favorite features is the walking trail that loops around the pond. While there’s a small beach tucked along the shoreline, I rarely use it. Instead, I love the peaceful paths, mature trees, and natural surroundings that offer a softer transition between the architectural elements throughout the property.

Woodlake is one of those locations that works beautifully with almost any style.

If you’re planning multiple outfits, this is one of my favorite places to mix casual and dressy looks. The variety of backgrounds helps each outfit feel like it was photographed somewhere completely different.
One of my favorite times to photograph at Woodlake is right as daylight begins to fade.
If our timing is just right, we can finish near one of the restaurants and storefronts where the twinkle lights begin to glow. Paired with the rich red brick buildings and black architectural accents, they create a warm, inviting atmosphere that’s completely different from the rest of the session.
And here’s one of my favorite little secrets: some of my favorite flower portraits at Woodlake haven’t been in the gardens everyone notices—they’ve been in beautifully landscaped areas that most people simply walk past. After years of photographing here, I’ve learned that some of the best backdrops aren’t always the most obvious ones.
Some of my favorite senior sessions haven’t taken place in parks, beaches, or downtowns.
They’ve happened in places that mean something.
A family farm that’s been passed down for generations.
The horse pasture where a senior has spent countless evenings.
A family cabin up north.
Grandpa’s woods.
The backyard where they learned to ride a bike.
A quiet country road that no one else would ever think to stop at.
These places may not appear on any “Top 10 Senior Photo Locations” list, but they often become the most meaningful photographs we create.
One of the things I love most about custom senior sessions is discovering places that already hold a piece of your story. Sometimes they’re beautiful because of the scenery. More often, they’re beautiful because of the memories attached to them.
When we photograph somewhere that’s personally meaningful, your gallery becomes more than a collection of beautiful portraits. It becomes a time capsule of this season of your life.

Whenever someone tells me, “I know it’s probably not a good photo location, but…”
…I immediately get excited.

I’ve photographed seniors on family farms, hidden country roads, private woods, and places that would never catch your eye if you were simply driving by. What makes them beautiful isn’t that they’re perfect. It’s that they matter.
Those are often the galleries families treasure the most because years from now, the place itself may have changed—but the memories never will.
