What to Wear: H.S. Senior Girls

Your senior photoshoot is booked, so you can start preparing! Where to begin? Your closet! Yes, you might go shopping too, but I bet you can find lots of things you already own that fit these what to wear guidelines…

Choose Variety – You have the opportunity to wear different outfits for your senior session, so aim for lots of variety! Bring outfits that are unique in color and mood. Think of both the special pieces you might not wear often because they’re impractical for day-to-day use, AND the go-to outfit you wear when you want to feel good. This is your chance not only to show your personal style, but also to go all out and dress like a movie star! You might even want to go shopping, borrow, rent (renttherunway.com) or make your dream outfit!

Fit Your Form – Fitted clothing works best for photographs, especially along your top half. Skip that billowy blouse or anything with large loose sleeves – while they look flattering in person, they will not look great in camera. This applies to all body types!

Flatter Your Arms – Varying sleeve lengths is a great way to add extra diversity to your looks. If you’re at all self conscious about your arms, pass on sleeveless tops, spaghetti straps or cap sleeves and choose short, 3/4 or long sleeve.

Consider Necklines – Mixing up necklines will add variety to your shots!

Avoid Too Much Pattern – Avoid busy and high-contrast patterns which are distracting for portraits. Solid colors or very simple patterns will work much better. If you find a patterned piece you fall in love with try to simplify the look with a solid colored layer. Remember, “less is more”!

Think Texture – Luxurious textures like lace, chiffon, bead-work, or embroidery lend a rich, tactile element to your photos.

Layer Up & Accessorize –Cardigans, jackets, vests, scarves and wraps are great pieces for a flattering layered look. Simple, neutral, understated jewelry will help complete each outfit. If you’re feeling spunky a cute hat or pair of glasses will be fun for a few!

Skip Bulky Jackets – While layers are great, unless your jacket is fitted, opt instead for a snug cardigan, which is a better choice for photographs.

No Logos – Logos or graphics are definite “don’ts”. Unless it’s your college sweatshirt or sports gear for just a few fun photos!

Bring Necessary Undergarments – This is really important! Consider the underwear you’ll need for each outfit. Certain looks call for a strapless bra, black bras look best under dark clothing, and nude bras are always better than white.
